2009 Phillies Team Issue Home Run Derby

Set Type: Primary
Card dimensions:
4″ x 6″
Additional Information: Issued in conjunction with the Phillies’ annual Home Run Derby competition, a home run hitting contest for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15, this card utilizes the same design as the 2009 Phillies Team Issue set. While the Home Run Derby logo on the front and back of the card make it easy to discern from Werth’s card in the Phillies Team Issue, the card also uses a different photo and bears a purple facsimile of his autograph on the front of the card. The card is unnumbered; instead, it uses Werth’s jersey number (28) on the back.

  1. This is probably as good a post as any to point out a site I have stumbled across that has checklists, plus downloadable photos, of most of the black and white Phillies team issued postcards: http://www.tradingcarddb.com . If you search for the word Phillies, you will come across the 1969-82 team-issued sets. From 1983 forward, the Phillis put the year on the photo and in 1982 they say “Tastykake” on the front, but for prior years the cards themselves give no indication of the year. (Well, if the player has a perm, it’s probably from 1978 or 1979!) I used to rely on the team-issued spring training rosters that have posed photos of each player on the back to try to identify the years of the postcards, but I only have a few years of those, plus those rosters don’t include players who were added to the team and the sets later in the year, so that site is a much better resource. (And I haven’t tried it yet, but I suspect that if you print them out as 3×5 photos, they will make nice “fillers” until one gets the actual photocards….)

Thanks for pointing out this Werth card which I hadn’t come across before but will look quite nice alongside the rest of the 2009 photocard set.

  2. Hi,

Do you know if this was given away at CBP the day of the HR derby or was it inserted into sets sold that day? Any info would help.

    Thanks in advance!

    Matt

    • Unfortunately, I have no further information I can give. I got this in an eBay auction, and my requests for additional info from the seller didn’t go very far. Everything I know about this particular card went into this post.

I have no idea if there were additional cards issued in conjunction with the event.
